As your County Commissioner, I am focused on lowering the pressures families feel from the rising cost of living, keeping taxes and county costs under control, growing local economic opportunity and making sure county government is open and accountable.

Local interests should always come first.

Meet Jamie

Jamie Harvey serves as Vice Chair of the San Juan County Commission, representing District 3.

A lifelong San Juan County resident, Jamie is Diné (Navajo) and speaks, reads and writes Diné Bizaad. He and his wife, Cheryle, have four adult children.

Jamie has spent his career serving local families and communities and believes government works best when it listens to the people it serves.

Why I'm Running
I am running to bring unity and transparency to our community and because I want San Juan County to remain a place where families can afford to live, work and build a future. That means keeping taxes low, creating more local economic opportunity and making sure the County is spending wisely. For too long our county has been divided. In years past our county government was influenced by outside interests with no connection to our community. As your commissioner I have worked hard to bring our local government back to the people. We need leadership that can work together to get things done. We might not always agree, but we can still tackle hard issues and find solutions that work in San Juan County.

My Experience
I have lived in San Juan County my entire life. I was born in Monument Valley, was raised herding sheep with my grandmother and graduated from Whitehorse High School, where I met my wife, Cheryle. Family, faith and community have always been at the center of my life. I earned degrees from the College of Eastern Utah in Blanding and the University of Utah and began my career helping people find employment through the Department of Workforce Services. For 20 years, I served on the Utah Navajo Health System Board, including as Board Chair. I also served as Aneth Chapter Secretary-Treasurer. These experiences prepared me to serve on the San Juan County Commission, where I have represented District 3 since 2022. I remain focused on listening to local residents, standing up for our communities and making government work for the people who live here.

Get to Know Me
When I'm not working, I enjoy playing music, riding my motorcycle and spending time with my family. My wife and I love to make Navajo tacos for our friends and family, and I'm known for my chili bean recipe, perfected over many years.

Cost of Living
Keeping food on the table, wood in the stove, gas in the truck, and the lights on is getting harder. County government can't control every rising price, but we can keep taxes and county costs under control, cut unnecessary fees and make sure public dollars go toward the roads, infrastructure and services our communities need. Families should keep more of what they earn.

Open & Accountable Government
County government should work in the open and listen to the people it serves. Residents deserve to know how decisions are made and elected officials should lead with transparency. Local residents should always have a voice.

Local Control
Decisions about San Juan County should always include San Juan County residents and not outside voices. Whether we are dealing with public lands, natural resources, economic development or other major issues, the people who live here understand our community needs and way of life. We need a strong local voice in decisions that affect our future.

Economic Opportunity & Fiscal Responsibility
We need good jobs, strong local businesses and more opportunities for people to earn a good living close to home. At the same time, the county government must spend responsibly, protect essential services and make every tax dollar count. Economic growth should benefit the people who already live here through stronger businesses, better jobs and needed infrastructure. As elected leaders, we should be mindful of the needs of our working adults and help them achieve greater prosperity during these tough economic times. Growth should work for local residents, not just grow government.
